Notes
This music was written by John Longhurst, who was organist for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square for 30 years (1977-2007). The tune was written to accompany a poem written by Elder Bruce R. McConkie, and the result is a hymn often sung in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and of course by the Tabernacle Choir. I remember learning it during church meetings when I was a child.
I have been working on this arrangement for several months, and Easter weekend seemed like the right time to record and post it. Jesus Christ is my hope for salvation. He is everything I wish for my family.
This arrangement was inspired by one of my favorite Chet Atkins albums, called Back Home Hymns. Chet favored these big hollow body archtop guitars, and he often played a Gretsch like this one I picked up a few months ago. I was noodling around on the guitar one Sunday afternoon and picked out the opening bars of this song, and once I had figured out half of the verse I decided to go all in and make my own arrangement. It was a lot of fun to do, and I hope you enjoy it.
