FLY LIKE A BIRD

lyrics & music by Tom Sanderson

When the weight of the world bears down let’s roll
Let’s find a new place to go
Let’s look for new things to show
Put the fuel in the big machine let’s drive
Discover we’re still alive
Make your destiny arrive

And I’m free
No city walls encumber me
Perched atop the highest tree
Throw my burdens to the sea
and I am sitting comfy
Fly like a bird through the sky
Pass the throngs of people by
Part the angry clouds that cry
Laugh at all the barriers defy

Answer the urge to get away and soar
The suburbs are a bore
Life is fine but there’s much more
If just for a moment lighten from every care
and breathe in some cleaner air
May that happiness find you there

And I’m free
No city walls encumber me
Perched atop the highest tree
Throw my burdens to the sea
and I am sitting comfy
Fly like a bird through the sky
Pass the throngs of people by
Part the angry clouds that cry
Laugh at all the barriers defy

What is the meaning of toil if there’s no release
The conflict may never cease
For a moment let’s find some peace
There’s plenty of open roads there to free your mind
and stressors to leave behind
Who knows what things you will find?

And I’m free
No city walls encumber me
Perched atop the highest tree
Throw my burdens to the sea
and I am sitting comfy
Fly like a bird through the sky
Pass the throngs of people by
Part the angry clouds that cry
Laugh at all the barriers defy

This recording started with the Wurlitzer electric piano (via Roland). I think I was aiming for a spin off of “Child of Vision” by Supertramp but ended up touching a range of mid-to-late seventies rock that is part of my musical wallpaper (metaphorically, but I used to have musical icons on the wall). I can’t say this is groundbreaking music but at least it doesn’t draw inspiration heavily from any one source.

I am certain that much of the world can figure out what events might have spurned these lyrics – I do think it has something to do with occasionally needing a break from being cooped up.
